May 29 Thua (Katie)

Departing from Da Nang yesterday, heading towards our first stop at Thua's home, our van began on paved multi-lane developed highways and ended up on narrow dirt pathways that were clearly used only for walking and motor bikes. A fearless and talented driver we had.

Thua and his family came out and met us out in front of his house, all smiles. We delivered vitamins, joint medication, ibuprofen, an electric fan, snacks for his family, and candy for the children. We determined that he has been taking the vitamins and medications that were delivered last year as directed and that he notices quite an improvement! He now has another year's supply. One of Thua's 196th comrades from the United States, with whom he was good friends during the war, generously donated funds specifically for Thua, which we passed along to him. Thua's wife was an attentive hostess, pulling up chairs for everyone and offering us more drinks (water and coca cola) than we could consume. The children showed Kira all their animals... pigs, dogs, birds, chickens, ducks, and a cow.

My dad told Thua about our discovery of Mr. Man and showed the photographs of Man when he was a solider. Though Thua's recollection of him was unclear, he still seemed pleased that this other soldier remembered him. Sergeant Stoney (also from the 196th) was interested in finding out if Thua knew Kit Carson Scout Lai. It turns out that he did know him, but does not know his whereabouts now.

My dad assessed for further needs he might have, but he seems to have no complaints that extend beyond the need for continuation of the vitamins and medications. We are happy to find that he is looking healthy and doing well!
