June 11 Ms. Hanh (Katie)

Ms. Hanh
The Woman Born With No Arms

Our final stop of the day was Ms. Hanh. To her, we gave a water heater with all necessary shower plumbing hookups, 2 boxes of milk with 2 glass cups, 15 packages of noodles, two bath towels, four shower loofahs, a large bottle of bodywash (with a pump-top so Ms. Hanh can easily use it), a toy truck for the young boy, and an assorted bag of cookies, candy, and cheese crackers.

A worker was scheduled to come hook up her new water heater and shower attachments the day after we visited her. She should be all ready to go now! The boy was napping when we arrived, but once he woke up, Kira gave him the toy truck that she picked out for him. Sleepy and very shy at first, he eventually moved to the floor and started gently pushing the truck back and forth between his hands. After some encouragement on Kira's part, they began rolling it back and forth, first only a few feet apart. Then he got more into it and they started scooting further apart every few rolls to make it more challenging.

Ms. Hahn's family surprised us by serving us quite a lunch! They made chicken soup from their own chicken, seasoned sticky rice with freshly harvested and ground-up peanuts for sprinkling on top, fresh lychees (a fruit with sweet tender flesh), a large bowl of whole peanuts (still wet from the ground), and che bap (Vietnamese sweet corn pudding) for dessert. Mr. Tuyen brought along some beers to share as well.

Ms. Hahn and her sister thanked my father multiple times during our visit, along with showing their appreciation by preparing that wonderful meal. What food we were not able to eat, they put in bags for us to take.
