June 19 With Nha Trang's Communist Party Leader-"The Top Dog" (Neil)

Were it not for this bustling seaside city being the residence of Col. Tha, my former foe, it's unlikely that Nha Trang would have ever even been on my radar. Even though the 91 year-old retired Colonel is still recovering from surgery in Hanoi, we decided to travel 10.5 hours from DaNang to Nha Trang via train with hopes of being able to drop off gifts at his house. It was about a 30-minute walk from our hotel to Mr. Tha's residence. I was pleasantly surprised when Khanh, the Colonel's son, answered the door. Tha's wife was with her recuperating husband in Hanoi. I first met Khanh and his son in 2015, when the son served as interpreter during my initial meeting with his grandfather.

Although about to leave, Khanh cordially invited us into the house, where we presented gifts for his father....multi-vitamins and a specially-made Nhi Ha photo book.

Shortly after a phone call commanded his immediate attention, Khanh kindly dropped us off at our hotel. During that short car trip, we were informed that he is the area's Communist Party Chairman. In essence, that places him on the top the political ladder.  As we parted company, Khanh invited us to dinner at 7 PM.

Admittedly, dinner with the top dog had me a bit apprehensive. However, Khanh's easy-going and kind demeanor made it a very enjoyable, pleasant experience. The top-notch seaside restaurant served up amazingly delicious food. Katie, Kira, and I thoroughly relished the experience. I will say this... if you want to be considered important in Nha Trang, dine with the Communist Party Chairman. Unparalleled service. Indeed, he is "the man."

Earlier in the day, we hit the beach, a very popular spot in this town. While Katie and I just bummed around, Kira played for hours in an inflatable playground.

Knowing my affinity for a certain Vietnamese tea that his father had gifted me last year, Mr. Khanh dropped off three packages of the tasty stuff at my hotel the following day. Now I'm set though the winter!
