June 3 At Dong Ha (Neil)
Well, we traveled north from Hue to Dong Ha today, where we were greeted by Nhung. There is much blog catching up to do, as it has been a busy one. We'll have to tackle details when the dust settles. We worked our way past Camp Evans, Khe Sanh Combat Base, and The Rockpile to Dakrong Bridge, a crossing point of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. That excursion included a stop at the the Paco ethnic minority village near Dakrong Bridge.
While Katie and Kira rested at the hotel, Nhung and I taxied to the hospital, where we visited Mr. Ba, former leader of all VC resistance in this region during the war. En route, I bought a nice fan to bestow as a gift. Mr. Ba very much wants to join us in Nhi Ha (his home) tomorrow, so we'll pick him up at the hospital on the way.
I've talked of the Battle of Nhi Ha so many times. However, a sense of foreboding always precedes my physical presence at that former killing ground. Tomorrow is the day. It has been 50 years. We leave the hotel at 7 AM.
I'm sorry to have skimmed over today, but more details will follow. I've the pre-Nhi Ha jitters....
