June 9 Fishing Village (Katie)

Yesterday we visited a fishing village called Thuy Phu outside of Hue. There are many of these types of communities scattered across Vietnam. The people's sole income comes from the fish they catch and sell. However, it does not earn them very much, and many of the children go to work in Ho Chi Minh City (almost 600 miles away) after they finish 9th grade to work to send money home to their families. Each family lives on their own boat, and they typically go swimming in the river every afternoon. You'll find a picture below of a daddy and his baby taking a bath in the river. Hearts for Hue together with D.O.V.E. Fund has installed solar power on their boats, which allows the children light to study by, power for rice cookers, and so on. We came prepared... and passed out three bags full of treats for the kids.

On the return trip to Hue, we stopped at a hardware store. With the help of Hong, who works at Hearts for Hue, we purchased the hose for Mr. Tho. We originally planned on a 12-meter hose to get water from his well to his shower area and animals, but my dad decided on 17 meters to be on the safe side. Later that day, we went across the river to the market to get last minute gifts and food items for the families that we were to visit the following day. (How did those visits go? Check back to find out!)
